9. Turbulence/Icing
Report-Page
WinterOPS is a Palm OS
software for airline pilots. The current version 3.1.LH306 of WinterOPS is
designed for Lufthansa Airbus A300-600/A310-300 pilots, but can also be used by
other pilots except for the aircraft information page and the limitations page.
WinterOPS runs on
common Palm OS devices, with an operating system version 3.0 or higher.
WinterOPS supports color devices but also works on black-and-white screens. If
your Palm OS version is incompatible with WinterOPS a warning screen will be
presented.
WinterOPS was tested
by several Lufthansa pilots before its release.
WinterOPS can be
installed like any other Palm OS program.
Attention! Check the
options-page after installing a new version of WinterOPS. Some
options-parameters might have changed during the installation process.
At the bottom of WinterOPS you find different tabs for the various
pages. There is an additional button for aircraft limitations and information
in the lower right corner of the screen.
Click one of the tabs or the information button to switch from one
screen/page to another.
There are also menu-entries. Open the menu by clicking the menu-icon on
your Palm Graffiti area and select the desired menu-item.
Most of the pages have an information-icon in the upper right corner.
Click this icon to open the help-display for this page.
Click the desired parameter/value or the dotted field-line to enter or change
a certain parameter. Use either the keyboard or Graffiti-style to enter the
desired value. Click the button “<” to clear the last entered digit. Click
the button “Clr” to clear the entire value

This page allows you to quickly decode MOTNE runway reports. You can
either decode a MOTNE runway code or alternatively generate a MOTNE runway code
by defining the current runway condition.
Enter the 8-digit MOTNE report (e.g. as shown on the METAR) to get the
decoding.
Enter the actual runway condition to be able to calculate the
corresponding limitations. The following parameters can be specified:
-
Runway
e.g. 01
- 36, 51 – 86 for parallel right runways (e.g. 51 for Rwy 01R), 88 for “ALL
Rwy” and 99 if a previous report is reported.
-
Deposit

-
Extent

-
Depth
Enter
numbers for depth in mm (e.g. 10 for 10 mm). If you like to enter a depth in cm
click the button “cm” after inserting the number.
-
Braking

-
Friction (FC)
Enter
the last two digits of the friction coefficient (e.g. 34 for FC = 0.34).
Click the button “SN” to get the SNOWTAM decoding table.

Click the “LIM” button to display the corresponding wind limits for the
actual runway condition.

Enter the actual wind (heading and speed in kts). For a more precise
calculation you can use the exact runway heading by entering 3 digits (e.g. 257
for 257°):

A different presentation (runway wind) is available. Click the “Display”
push-button:

Click the “LIM” button to display the corresponding wind limits for the
actual runway condition (entered on the MOTNE Runway Report-page).

WinterOPS differs between three different runway conditions (dry, wet and
contaminated). The equivalent maximum crosswind (X-Wind) and tailwind
components are calculated.
A red cross indicates that this limit is exceeded. The parameter that
actually exceeds the limits is red-boxed.

Enter the following parameters to get the corresponding hold-over time
(HOT) in hours:minutes:
-
Type of deicing fluid:

-
Mixture of fluid:

-
Outside air temperature (OAT):

-
Weather

Click the RESET-button to delete all entries in the HOT table.

Enter the 6-digit turbulence (1st digit = 5) or icing (1st
digit = 6) report to get the decoding.

Two functions are
available on the calculation page:
Before each flight and
during any flight phase (especially in RVSM) the altimeters of CM1 and CM2 have
to be crosschecked regularly.
Enter the flight level
(FL) or 0 to get the maximum allowed difference between altimeter readings.
When approaching an
airport in extreme temperature conditions minimum altitudes like approach
minimum, outer marker altitude, MSA or MGA have to be corrected. In such cases
the altimeter of the aircraft does not show the correct true altitude. If
temperatures are low the indicated altitude is on the “unsafe” side i.e. the
true altitude is lower!
Enter the airport
elevation and outside air temperature at the airport. Then enter the true
altitude of the desired fix (or the equivalent altitude above aerodrome
elevation). The corrected indicated altitude will then be displayed.
For simplified
calculations enter 0 ft for the airport elevation. Like this you will always
get a corrected indicated altitude that is on the “safe” side.

The holding fuel-page allows you to quickly calculate your maximum
holding time. Both cases - keeping your alternate and committing to stay – are
displayed.
The alternate fuel and the approach fuel can be entered instead of the
actual fuel quantity value. The required fuel quantity is then calculated by
multiplying the distance to fly with the fuel flow (kg/nm, defined on the
options-page).
Click the A306/A310 button to switch between the two aircraft types. The
corresponding fuel flow (as defined on the options-page) will be inserted. In
addition the final reserve is changed to 30 min multiplied by the fuel flow.
The calculated holding limit values are displayed in the blue-square:
-
min = minimum fuel when leaving the holding.
-
t = maximum holding time
-
UTC = latest approach time (based on your palm internal clock and the
world time zone).

Click the Limits-Icon in the lower right corner to open the aircraft
information page.
Information about the aircraft are available. Click the desired subject
(e.g. speed for speed limits) to open the corresponding page.

Return to the last opened page by clicking the “OK” button.

Open the about-page through the menu
“Info/About” (shortcut “A”).
You find information about
PohlTec has all copyrights on WinterOPS.
WinterOPS may be distributed between other airline pilots by sending the
program through the Palm device infrared interface. A copy of the source file
(FlyLH.prc) may also be given to other airline pilots.

Open the disclaimer-page through the menu “Info/Disclaimer” (shortcut
“D”).
The disclaimer states that all data presented by WinterOPS is for
information only and not for operational use!

Open the options-page through the menu “Setup/Options” (shortcut “O”).
Startup:
Select the page that shall open automatically when starting the program.
If you select the iitem “Last Opened Screen”, the last displayed page will be
opened again when restarting the program.
Save-Clickboxes:
Click any of the clickboxes to save the values entered on the
corresponding pages (e.g. “Save MOTNE Report” if you would like to keep the
runway report entered on the runway page).
Aircraft-Performance Values:
Two aircraft types can be specified (default: A306 and A310). Enter the
name of the aircraft type, the average holding fuel flow (FF) in kg/h and kg/nm
(approximation for the approach and alternate).
Time Zone:
Define the time zone of your Palm internal clock in relation to UTC
(e.g. 1 h for Germany during wintertime).
If you use Palm OS 4.0 or higher click the button “TimeZone”. The Palm
internal time zone (including daylight saving time) will be taken for the
calculation of the time zone.
Save data:
Exit the options page by clicking the “SAVE” button.
